Nimbus is an open-source toolkit designed to provide an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud to its clients. Developed by Kate Keahey, Tim Freeman, and others, Nimbus was initially released on January 9, 20091. It is written in Java and Python and operates on the Linux platform, supporting both Xen and KVM hypervisors1.
Key Features
Nimbus allows users to deploy self-configured virtual clusters through contextualization. This means that users can create and manage virtual machines (VMs) that are pre-configured to work together as a cluster1. Nimbus supports various virtual machine schedulers, including the Portable Batch System and Oracle Grid Engine1. It is also configurable in terms of scheduling, networking leases, and usage accounting1.
Requirements
To run Nimbus, the following components are required:
Xen 3.x or Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM)
Java 1.5 or higher
Python 2.4 or higher
Linux kernel's Netfilter and ebtables for a bridging firewall
DHCP server1
